A 1500 calorie diet is often the one that doctors recommend for diabetics to follow. It not only helps you to lose weight, but it also keeps the blood sugar levels under control. It provides a balance between carbohydrates, fats and proteins while restricting the amount of fats and calories that you consume.  

When you choose a 1500 calorie diet, you should still follow the basic guidelines for dieting in general. Eating smaller meals about six times a day has been found to be more effective than three regular meals. You can easily plan your daily menu in advance so that you do not find yourself snacking on foods high in calories when you get hungry. Fruits and vegetables always make good snacks without adding calories to your diet because these foods contain what care called negative calories. The body has to burn calories in order to digest them. 

A 1500 calorie diet gives you the amounts of each food group you should have for each meal. For example, on such a diet it is recommended that you eat 2 breads or starches. A bowl of cereal counts as one and a slice of toast is the other. In addition you should have a fruit and milk. The butter you spread on your toast counts as 1 fat. This is a hearty breakfast, which will keep you going until mid-morning when you have a snack of fruit or vegetables. 

The lunch and dinner allowances on a 1500 calorie diet are very generous. For lunch you can choose to have 222 ounces of meat of protein, 2 breads and a fruit – a typical lunch of a sandwich and fruit. For dinner, you are allowed to have 3 ounces of meat, a baked potato and a dinner roll as well as 2 vegetables and a fruit- again a typical dinner. You may find yourself being hungry when you first start the diet, but exercise and plenty of water will give you the inspiration to continue once you start to lose the weight.
