The Adkin’s diet is the diet program proposed by Dr. Atkins and is essentially a low carb - high protein diet. On this diet you keep your consumption of breads and starches to a minimum but increase the amounts of proteins and fats. It is amazing that fats will help you to lose weight, but it really does if you follow this diet very strictly. You do need to eat a lot of meat, fish and poultry as well as other foods that are rich in protein.
When you are on the Adkin’s diet, you need to limit yourself to 25-40 carbohydrates a day for at least the first two weeks. The protein you eat in your diet helps to raise your body’s metabolism by converting the fat into lean muscle mass, which actually helps you to burn calories at a faster rate. You should eat frequent meals and carefully check the list of ingredients on the foods you purchase at the supermarket. Many foods that are advertised as low fat actually contain a lot of carbohydrates, which defeats the purpose of the diet.
The Adkin’s diet is a great diet to start off your weight loss program because you see results in a very short time. However it is not a good idea to remain on this diet for a very long time because your body does need carbohydrates in order to keep your organs working the way they should.
In developing the Adkin’s diet, Dr. Atkins looked at the dietary habits of our prehistoric ancestors who relied mostly of the meat of the animals they killed for the staple in their diet. He also considered the fact that none of these people were overweight. Using the types of foods that were typically found in their environment, - plants, fruits, vegetables and meat- he developed a diet that is used by people all over the world who are trying to lose weight.
