The Adkins diet is a famous low carbohydrate diet plan developed by Dr. Robert Atkins. First introduced in the 1970’s when Atkins published his book “Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution”, the diet became incredibly popular very fast. Millions of people worldwide have followed the Adkins diet.
As mentioned above, the Adkins program is a low carb diet, which means that it tells you to restrict carbohydrate intake. During the first two weeks of the plan you are only allowed to eat about 20 grams of carbs per day. Later you can add a little more carbs, but in the long run Atkins recommends eating no more than 40 to 90 grams of carbohydrates per day.
So what is the idea behind the Adkins diet and other low carbohydrate diets? It’s very simple. Normally your body will burn carbohydrates for fuel. However, when you limit carbohydrate intake your body will look start using other enregy sources such as fat. So, when you begin to burn fat for energy due to lack of carbs you will lose weight.
Although there are lots of success stories the Adkins diet is somewhat controversial. Some nutritionists claim it increases risk of cancer and other diseases. Others say it simply does not work and any weight loss people may experience is due to calorie restriction rather than carbohydrate restriction.
