The Akins diet is a high protein diet that lets you eat all the meat and fat you want and still lose weight. This diet really works and there is scientific evidence to support the diet. It is not the meat and fat that helps to accelerate the weight loss, but the low intake of carbohydrates that forces the body to focus on burning up its stores of fat.
When you start the Akins diet, you limit the number of carbohydrates you eat. This jumpstarts the body into lipolysis/ketosis because the body can no longer rely on carbohydrates for its energy. As long as you limit the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, your weight loss will continue. You can eat a lot of fat, but you also have to remember that there are good and bad fats. This means that you not only have to read the list of ingredients on product packaging to see how many carbohydrates there are in each serving, but you also have to see what kinds of fats are included in the product. You have to stay away from trans fats and naturally occurring fats. The fats that come from animals and some plants are saturated fats that could lead to an increase in your cholesterol.
You do not always have to stick to eating meat and poultry to get a lot of protein on the Akins diet. Vegetable proteins are also really good. These can be found in foods such as soy. Fish is also a great source of protein, especially salmon. In fact the food pyramid recommends you eat fish at least 2 – 3 times a week to ensure that you are eating a well-balanced diet.
