The Atkin diet involves beginning with a two-week introductory phase where your body gets used to the lack of carbohydrates in your diet. There are some things you can do to help you get through this phase, especially if you are a person who likes to eat bread and starchy foods. When you begin this diet you should not have more than 20 carbohydrates a day. After then first week, you can gradually increase this amount by 5 carbohydrates a week, until you reach a point where you stop losing weight. When you decrease the number, the weight loss will start again.
There are several steps you can take to make the Induction phase of the Atkin diet easier. You can continue to eat three regular sized meals, but most people prefer to have four or five smaller meals so that they are not feeling hungry. You do not have to restrict yourself in the amounts of fish, meat, and poultry you eat because these foods are rich in protein and will help to build the lean muscle mass you need to raise your body’s metabolic rate.
You should not eat fruit when you are on the Atkin diet because even though they are natural foods, they do contain high amounts of carbohydrates. You can eat avacados, tomatoes and olives and even though nuts are high in protein, you should not eat these during the first two weeks. When you sit down to eat, do not stuff yourself, but eat until you feel full. You also need to take a daily vitamin supplement because when you are cutting down on carbohydrates your body may not be getting all the essential nutrients it needs.
