When you want to calculate you body mass index, you need to use a BMI calculator in order to get the best results. Your body mass index is a calculation of your body fat based on your height and weight. The calculator applies to both men and women so both can use the same one. You can use a calculator for your body mass index that is found on most weight loss Internet sites. All you have to do is enter your height and weight and then press compute. Your BMI will appear on the screen.
When you use a BMI calculator, you will be able to find out if you are underweight, overweight or the right weight for your height. A body mass index of less than 18.5 means you are underweight. The normal BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. If your calculation is above that number, then this will tell you that you need to consider losing weight.
There are limitations to using a BMI calculator. In athletes who have a muscular build, the calculator may actually overestimate the amount of body fat. On the opposite end, it may underestimate the body fat of a person who has just lost a lot of muscle mass or in older persons.

Those with a BMI of over 30 are considered obese and as such are in the high-risk category for developing heart disease or diabetes. There are also other risk factors to consider such as lack of physical activity, smoking, drinking alcohol to excess, blood pressure and cholesterol levels and your family’s medical history.
A BMI calculator can give the same measurement of body fat for two different people – one with a lot more body fat than the other. This is because the calculation is determined by the weight and height. If your BMI is high you should consult your physician.
