Body fat measurement is a way of finding out your correct body weight and composition. If you are wishing to start a diet plan then knowing your body fat measurement can be an important thing to know. This will give you some idea of what you need to do to lose the desired amount of weight. However, in order to find out what your measurements are you need to know exactly what body fat is and how you can measure it. A person’s body fat is the subcutaneous layer of fat that is beneath the skin and you percentage or measurement of body fat can be measured by taking the “skin fold” at certain points on the body. The measurement itself is taken by using an instrument called a caliper. Body fat measurement itself consists of a set of four measurements.
To take your body fat measurement requires that you do certain things. For example you must ensure that all the measurements are located on the right side of the body. You cannot take the measurements on opposites sides of the body. They must all come from the same side. Also, the measurements themselves must be taken in millimeters. When you start taking the measurement you will take the skin fold in between your forefinger and your thumb. You then apply the calipers about one centimeter from the finger and thumb and the depth should equal the thickness of the skin fold. To ensure that all measurements are as valid and reliable as possible you should have the same person take all four measurements. Then once all measurements are taken you will add them together to get the total value in millimeters. You can then use a calculator to determine the body fat measurement or percentage.
