Why is it that most diets ask you to restrict how much alcohol you consume? There are almost twice as many calories in alcohol as there are carbohydrates and proteins. While red and white wines and beer do not contain any fat, they do contain high amounts of calories. For this reason, you should limit the amount of alcohol, wine and beer you drink while on a diet because they can interfere with your weight loss program. 

There is nothing wrong with having a few drinks of alcohol. While there are calories in alcohol, when you drink moderate amounts it will not seriously impede the weight loss. If you play sports, having two drinks a day is compatible, but having more than that amount is not. Drinking too much alcohol impairs your performance level so you should not drink just before you exercise or play in a game.  

With the trend toward low carb diets, many makers of wines, beers and alcohol are developing low carb beers and wines. The labels on the bottles state that the drink is low in carbohydrates but it does not mention the number of calories in alcohol. One glass of red wine is equal to about 100 calories while a bottle of beer has 87 calories. Alcohol contains about 7 calories a gram, which makes it very fattening. Even if you mix it with a diet soda or drink it straight, you will be hampering your dieting efforts by imbibing on a regular basis.
