Hotdogs are so quick and easy to make for a snack, people often forget to consider the amount of calories in hotdogs. No matter what type of sausage you use for the hotdog, each one is heavily laden with calories. Did you know that one regular hot dog has 240 calories and 15 g of fat? If you are on a 1500 calorie diet, for example, you would be able to eat about 6 hotdogs to fulfill one days food allotment. That is not enough food for one day, but many people often eat two or three hotdogs at one meal.
Even though the sausage or weiner used in the hotdog is meat, it is actually processed meat, which is not the same. In addition to the calories in hotdogs, there is a lot of sodium in the meat as a preservative. This sodium causes your body to retain water and will not help you to flush out any burned calories. Although they do contain protein, they have very little nutritional value.
There are many varieties of low fat hotdogs available today. Since 70% of the calories in hotdogs come from fat, you have to see how much fat is in the wieners. This is why you should carefully read the list of ingredients to see how much fat a particular brand contains, even if it is advertised as low fat. You can also get chicken hot dogs and tofu hotdogs. Vegetarian hotdogs are much lower in fat than the regular kinds because they are not made from animal fats. However, it is unlikely that you will be able to find these at your regular supermarket. You may have to shop at a health food store for this kind of hotdog.
