Although it is a well-documented fact that a low carbohydrate diet is very effective in helping people to lose weight, doctors do not advise it as a long-term solution. The body is designed to use the carbohydrates it gets from the food to help the organs work properly. When the body is deprived of this source of fuel, many health problems can result.  

Health professionals claim that a low carbohydrate diet can cause gout to develop. This is a form of arthritis that is a result of the build up of uric acid as a waste product produced when the liver metabolizes protein. Eating excessive amounts of protein can cause the body to become unable to get rid of all the uric acid.  Kidney stones are another result of the build up of uric acid that crystallizes into hard stones. When you eat carbohydrates in your diet, their insoluble fiber reduces the absorption of calcium and helps to prevent the stones from forming. 

Low carbohydrate diets often result in constipation and general malaise of the intestine. The body needs fiber in order to allow the waste products to pass through the intestine into the bowels. A build up of these wastes often leads to colon cancer. Carbohydrates are needed to ensure the strength of the intestinal wall and help to lower the risk of Crohn’s disease and many other intestinal problems. 

When you do not have an adequate carbohydrate diet, you are also at risk of losing muscle mass and thus a lowered metabolic rate. This means that the body will not burn calories at the rate that it should and actually slow down weight loss. You need to have string muscles to ensure a good recovery rate when you exercise. This gives you energy and prevents feelings of fatigue.
