A low carb diet is a diet that focuses mostly on limiting carbohydrate intake. So how do low carbohydrate diets work? Normally your body uses carbohydrate for fuel. When you eat few carbohydrates your body will run out of them and look for other sources of fuel, namely fat. When your body starts burning fat you lose weight.
Many people claim to have lost a significant amount of weight while on low carb diets, but they are a bit controversial. Some nutritionists have expressed concerns about them, saying they can lead to low energy, dehydration and even increased risk of cancer and osteoporosis. Others have stated that low carb diets are perfectly healthy.
The most famous low carb diet is the Atkins diet by Robert Atkins. It was first introduced in the 1970’s when Atkins published his book “Dr.Atkins Diet Revolution” and started the low carbohydrate diet trend. Today over 20 million people worldwide have followed this diet. Although this diet (like other low carb plans) remains controversial studies have shown that people following the Atkins diet have lost weight much faster than those following other plans.
